Letao Qin, Partner at Rimon Law, I am partner and I manage patent portfolios for technology companies and counsel clients on strategic patent planning.

Our firm helps fortune 500 companies, startups, inventors, and universities in a number of legal fields; I specifically work in the IP field where I advise clients on IP transactions, IP asset procurement, and all aspects of the patent and trademark processes.

What are some neat projects that your company is currently working on?

We are a highly diverse law firm, so that’s neat within itself. I have PhD in Astrophysics and have worked for two large technology companies prior to my legal career, so I am comfortable with handling complex technologies. I’m doing a lot of work in Artificial Intelligence and one of my clients is developing truly novel AI chips.

I’m also helping several international companies build up large IP portfolios in 5G technology, AI, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and screen display technologies. I have also done trademark protection and I advise my clients on how to protect their IP assets and protect themselves from infringement claims. I’ve been able to work with companies on the cutting edge of technological innovation. This makes my work extremely exciting from that perspective.

How would you describe your company’s culture?

Our company is a little different from a traditional law firm. We pride ourselves on being uniquely progressive and collaborative, and that has made us stand out in the industry as a great place to work. We like to say we have both happier lawyers and better served clients.

Our model is decentralized and our law firm has adopted leading edge technology in our operations to support that. This allows our attorneys to better serve and protect our clients. We have been repeatedly recognized by The Financial Times as one of North America’s most innovative law firms. Our law firm’s managing partners have both been named Legal Rebels by the American Bar Association (ABA) Journal.

What are some things you are excited about for your company for 2022?

Our firm is expanding very quickly. Since 2020 we have had a year over year growth of 28%. We continue to hire new talent and that has expanded our capabilities. Each new partner we onboard offers a unique skill set.

The breadth and depth of the support that we can offer to our clients is constantly being expanded. I’m particularly excited about the work I’ve done with Rimon in emerging technology sectors. We are excited that our company is positioned to and going to continue to expand in 2022.

Is there anything additional you would like to share about your company?

This is well known, but our model of business is very different from traditional law firms. It’s called a spherical model, which means that partners can reach out and contact the clients directly. That communication goes both ways; clients can interact with the partners responsible for their business directly.

I’ve found great success working under this model. I can offer clients shorter response times and greater transparency, while achieving a work-life balance that is rare in more sophisticated legal fields.
