Joe Doerr is a Partner in Rimon’s Private Client group.  He is certified by the California Board of Legal Specialization as a Specialist in Taxation Law. In his practice, Joe is known for providing insightful counsel to both individuals and businesses in domestic and international tax planning and tax controversy resolution, including appeals and audits with the IRS, FTB, EDD, and CDTFA.

Leveraging his expertise in gift and estate taxation, Joe offers high-net-worth individuals and families complex estate planning solutions by crafting comprehensive, tax‐efficient plans designed to achieve multigenerational objectives and support the successful continuation of closely-held businesses. His experience includes advanced planning techniques such as generation‐skipping trusts, intentionally defective grantor trusts, charitable trusts, and other complex irrevocable trust structures.

He also guides new businesses through stages of inception, including entity structure and formation, while counseling established businesses with restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, and capital needs.

Selected Experience

  • Defeated a multimillion-dollar proposed deficiency for a shareholder in a C-corporation in an overcompensation case with the IRS.
  • Defeated a high six-figure proposed deficiency for a business owner in a passive activity loss case with the IRS.
  • Virtually eliminated several proposed sales tax deficiencies for business owners with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.
  • Created multiple complex wealth transfer plans, each transferring well over $100 million of business assets, including significant real estate holdings, to complex multi-generational trusts without incurring gift tax, while being fully covered by generation-skipping tax exemption.
  • Implemented multi-generational strategies to transfer highly valued international business assets to dynasty trusts prior to such assets’ value ballooning well beyond the estate tax exemption amount.
  • Led multiple M&A and real estate transactions valued over $250 million since 2024, including multiple sales of privately held businesses to private equity firms and similar institutional investors.
