Private Markets Enter the Retail Era as SEC Convenes Valuation Roundtable

Insights Private Markets Enter the Retail Era as SEC Convenes Valuation Roundtable Sean Byrne · February 27, 2026

Today, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced that on March 4, it will host a roundtable to discuss private market valuations and responsible retailization. As sponsors and regulators move towards providing increasing retail access to what have traditionally been considered “alternative” investments, there is more and more pressure on the valuation of private assets, as these drive liquidity options and perceived net worth.

The roundtable is scheduled for March 4 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET and will consist of opening remarks, two panel discussions, and concluding remarks. The first panel is “When Two Worlds Collide” and will focus on the opportunities and challenges for managers, investors, and regulators as the lines between public and private continue to blur. Panelists include representatives from AQR Capital Management, PwC, Blackstone, and Moody’s. The second panel is “Fund Governance” and will focus on the challenges presented by delivering retail access to private market assets, including compliance with fair value determination under Rule 2a-5, and best practices. Panelists include representatives from the legal, accounting, and compliance worlds. To participate in-person in Washington, DC, parties need to register in advance. Details about the event and the registration-free link to view the roundtable online are here.
