Rimon Partner Ken Anderson recently guest-authored an article for Hypebot exploring the rapidly evolving legal questions surrounding generative AI and music copyright law. In the piece, Anderson examines how U.S. copyright law applies to AI-generated songs, whether prompts can establish ownership rights, and the growing legal battles between AI companies, labels, publishers, and artists.
“The licensee of a generative music AI system should not expect to own the output of their prompts,” Anderson writes, highlighting the growing uncertainty around authorship and ownership in AI-created music.
The article also discusses the broader implications of AI-generated music on licensing, artist compensation, and platform liability, as well as emerging strategies artists may use to protect their rights in the age of AI-created content.
Anderson is a Partner in Rimon’s Entertainment, Sports & Media group based in New York City. With a background in both music and technology law, he serves as general counsel to numerous Grammy-winning and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted artists and advises clients on issues at the intersection of entertainment, intellectual property, and emerging technologies.
